April 7-8th Hong Kong, China

by - April 08, 2019

We woke up at 1 AM to prepare for our 2 AM departure from my Dad's house.  My Dad and his friend Doug took us to the Minneapolis airport.  Thanks for the ride!  We were flying standby and were super happy to get on the first flight to Dallas at 5 AM.  We had a short layover and then we were off to Hong Kong.  It was a long 16 hour flight and we were happy to have it over.  We took the Airport Express Railway from the airport to Ashoka Hostel.  On the way we witnessed a truck run a red light and smash into a taxi.  We also didn't know that their steering wheel is on the right side of the car and they drive on the left side of the road, which is opposite of the rest of China.  The Ashoka Hostel is in a building called Chunking Mansions.  It took some work to find the hostel.  The sign by the elevator lead us to the 16th floor.  We got on the wrong elevator since one elevator goes to even numbers and the other odd numbers.  On the 16th floor there a sign told us to go to the 13th floor.  We found some nasty back staircases that lead us there.  Once we checked in, they told us to take a different elevator to the 8th floor.  We were greeted by another man, brought down a random hallway and given our key.  This key turns everything on and off in the room.  It must be plugged in for the electricity to work, which must save them a ton of money.  Our room also came with used flip flops...gross.  We showered and then headed out for dinner.  We ate at Shek Kee Wonton Noodles and it was awesome.  We sat with the locals and enjoyed our food.  I had the pork dumpling noodle bowl and Bart had the fish ball and wonton noodle bowl.  We both put two scoops of chili oil in our soup and we paid for it.  My mouth was on fire.  We went back to the hostel to get some sleep and to rest our swollen feet.
